• Xerox was the first in the United States to incorporate automatic energy-saving modes into the design of copiers, printers and other equipment. We introduced two-sided copying and two-sided laser printing for the first time in the US, cutting paper usage in half.
• Xerox takes back and recycles materials used in our manufacturing processes, including the metal alloy photoreceptors used in our products (35 million pounds of metal annually) and many plastics.
• Xerox uses containers and carts to transport permanent parts in its manufacturing operations, which we return to our suppliers for refilling and reuse.
• Xerox uses corrugated cardboard with recycled content to ship consumables, and we are working to increase this use. We recover and remanufacture approximately 1 million finished parts worldwide each year, with a total value of approximately $200 million.
• Xerox is eliminating the use of ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons in its packaging, service materials and manufacturing operations. 
• Whenever possible, Xerox uses natural, biodegradable cleaners instead of chemical solvents.
• Xerox sells duplicating and duplicating paper for recycled content in several regions around the world and plans to expand this program to other regions.
• Xerox is marketing an electronic typewriter that uses patented technology that reduces the sound of the daisy-wheel printing mechanism to 52 decibels, about 15 decibels quieter than standard daisy-wheel typewriters and quieter than normal conversation.
• Xerox has introduced van and car pool programs for employees in our major metropolitan locations. In the Los Angeles area, Xerox uses vans converted to run on cleaner-burning propane fuel.
• Xerox improved the fuel mileage of our fleet (including trucks) from an average of 13 mpg to 20 mpg in the 1980s.
• Xerox is a leading expert in full disclosure of health and safety information for the materials in our products.
